Raise a juice box to Brooklyn’s budding poets!
On Thursday, November 16th, a dozen students from Park Slope’s Middle School 88 take the stage at Barnes & Noble to share Brooklyn-themed literary creations. Young poets drew inspiration from sidewalk scenes and constellations of the heart. Once they wrote, they set their words against original artwork to create modern broadsides.
“Sitting on a hill/ where the silent sea / can meet the sullen sky” from “Sunset” by Z. L.
“When I met you, in / Park Slope at M.S. 88 / I fell in love with you.”
from “7th Ave Love” by R.P.
“… the empty space wants / the love it / deserves / to refresh again / to be silent…”
from “Falling into the Deep Trench in Brooklyn” by F.A.
The students, whose home languages include Arabic, Bangla, Chinese, Mandarin, Spanish and Urdu, practiced their presentation skills as part of the poetry project.
M.S. 88’s principal Ailene Mitchell will introduce the event, to be emceed by eighth grader, Miguel Garcia.
The My Brooklyn broadside project was made possible by an Ezra Jack Keats mini-grant awarded to teachers Julie Schildkraut (English Language Arts) and Laura Silver (English as a New Language).
