Middle School 88 – Cell Phone and Smart Device Policy
Purpose:
To foster a safe, equitable, and distraction-free learning environment where every student can thrive—academically, socially, and emotionally.
Policy Overview
Effective September 4, 2025, Middle School 88 will implement the following Cell Phone and Smart Device Policy in alignment with New York State’s standards for distraction-free schools:
No Unauthorized Use of Smart Devices During the School Day
Students are not permitted to use smartphones, smartwatches, or any internet-enabled personal devices during the school day (“Bell to Bell”), including but not limited to:
- Class time
- Lunch
- Hallways and bathrooms
- “Bell to Bell” is defined as the instructional day (8:20AM-2:40PM) as well as who early arrival for bussing or breakfast as well as all after school programming and school events.
Permitted Devices
- Basic cell phones (without internet access) may be carried but must remain off and out of sight at all times, unless otherwise noted under the exemptions below.
- School-issued laptops or tablets may only be used for instructional purposes and under direct staff supervision.
Unauthorized Use of Smart Device
Students who are observed using a smart device at Middle School 88 will have the phone confiscated and securely stored by school personnel. Repeated offenses may result in a parent conference and further action.
Students who use electronic devices in violation of the DOE’s Discipline Code, the school’s policy, Chancellor’s Regulation A-413, and/or the DOE’s Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy (“IAUSP”) will be subject to progressive discipline in accordance with the guidance interventions and disciplinary responses set forth in the Discipline Code.
Communication with Families
In case of emergencies or urgent matters, parents and guardians may contact the main office at 718-788-4482. Our staff will ensure timely and appropriate communication with students. If students need to contact a parent for any reason they will do so via the main office.
Exemptions
Personal devices may be used during the school day only under the following circumstances:
- Medical conditions that require active device monitoring or management
- Accommodations specified in a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP)
- Use of essential translation tools for English Language Learners
